Blood Message Wiki

Everything about NetEase's first AAA single-player action-adventure — from Shazhou uprising history to combat mechanics, before and after launch.

Overview

What Is Blood Message?

Blood Message is a cinematic, single-player, third-person action-adventure developed by 24 Entertainment Lin'an and published by NetEase Games. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, it blends brutal survival combat with a historically grounded Eastern narrative set during the late Tang Dynasty.

The world has heard too many stories of emperors and generals — Blood Message is an ode to unsung heroes. You play as a nameless messenger and his young son, caught in the Shazhou uprising and forced to carry a message eastward across nearly 3,000 li of hostile territory toward Chang'an.

Developer & Publisher

24 Entertainment Lin'an is part of NetEase Games' ThunderFire division — the same studio behind Naraka: Bladepoint. Blood Message marks NetEase's first fully single-player AAA title, a deliberate departure from the publisher's multiplayer-focused portfolio (Marvel Rivals, Where Winds Meet, Once Human).

Lead Producer Zhipeng Hu has positioned the project as a cinematic high-adventure experience built for players worldwide, with extensive historical research conducted alongside the Gansu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism for site scanning and geomorphological restoration of the Hexi Corridor.

Genre & Comparisons

Blood Message is a linear, narrative-driven action-adventure — not an open world, not a soulslike, and not a live-service game. Press and community comparisons often reference Uncharted, The Last of Us (father-son dynamic), and Chinese AAA peers like Black Myth: Wukong for visual ambition. These are useful reference points for tone, not mechanical clones.

  • Single-player only — no co-op or PvP
  • Linear story progression with action, stealth, and puzzle elements
  • Third-person perspective throughout
  • Real-time UE5 rendering — trailers confirmed 100% in-engine footage

Story & Setting

Historical Background: Shazhou's Return to Tang

After the An Lushan Rebellion, the Tang Empire lost control of the Hexi Corridor. Shazhou (part of modern Dunhuang) remained under Tibetan rule for over sixty years. In 848 AD, Zhang Yichao led an uprising that reclaimed Guazhou and Shazhou for the Tang.

Following the victory, Zhang dispatched ten messenger teams — mostly ordinary civilians, not generals — eastward to deliver the news to Chang'an, the Tang capital. Blood Message adapts this historical episode, focusing on one messenger's impossible journey rather than the grand campaigns of warlords.

The Journey East

You and your son are caught in the chaos of the Shazhou uprising. Entrusted with a message that could decide your homeland's fate, you must cross deserts, mountains, and war-torn settlements across East and Central Asia — roughly 3,000 li (about 1,000 miles) of lethal terrain.

Developers emphasize that the story avoids heavy fantasy. Historical research, Mogao Caves mural references, and collaboration with Gansu cultural authorities ground the setting in Tang-era customs, architecture, and geopolitics.

  • Themes: family, honor, sacrifice, cultural identity
  • Perspective: ordinary people vs. grand historical events
  • Tagline: "When history forgets, warriors remember"

The Mogao Caves Connection

The June 2025 reveal trailer reproduced a Tang-dynasty Mogao Caves mural depicting Zhang Yichao's army. This visual anchor signals the game's commitment to Dunhuang heritage and the cultural weight of the messenger's mission — delivering hope through darkness.

Characters

The Nameless Messenger (Father)

The protagonist is deliberately unnamed — one of many civilian couriers, not a legendary warrior. A stonecutter, farmer, monk, elder, or common laborer in the historical record; in the game, a father who must fight, sneak, and survive while keeping his son alive and the message intact.

The Son

The son accompanies the father throughout the journey. Trailers and previews suggest cooperative gameplay moments: coordinated stealth takedowns, environmental puzzles requiring both characters, and emotional story beats reminiscent of father-child dynamics in narrative action games.

The developers describe the bond as central to the emotional arc — duty to country versus love for family, tested across an eastward odyssey where survival is never guaranteed.

Historical Figures

Zhang Yichao and the Shazhou uprising frame the narrative backdrop. The ten messenger teams historically included diverse ordinary people. Expect the game to honor anonymous heroes rather than elevate a single chosen-one protagonist.

Controls & Combat

Combat Philosophy: Realistic Brutality

Blood Message emphasizes "realistic combat" — no flashy invincibility dodges or exaggerated wuxia flourishes. Cold weapon clashes focus on timing, weight, and lethality. Every strike can be a life-or-death decision.

The Summer Game Fest 2026 "Hold Till Dawn" trailer showcased new melee sequences across varied landscapes, reinforcing visceral close-quarters fighting blended with cinematic presentation.

Core Mechanics (From Trailers & Previews)

Based on official footage and developer interviews, expect the following combat elements. Final control bindings will be confirmed at launch or during the public demo.

  • Precise strike timing and guard breaks — block and parry at the right moment
  • Short blades and polearms for Tang-era melee encounters
  • Bows for ranged weakness exploitation and tactical openings
  • QTE sequences during key story moments for cinematic impact
  • Father-son coordinated attacks in stealth and combat scenarios
  • Large-scale battle scenes with multiple enemies on screen

Expected Control Layout

Standard third-person action-adventure mapping is expected: movement on left stick, camera on right, light/heavy attacks, dodge/block, interact, and stealth toggle. PlayStation, Xbox, and PC schemes will be revealed in the SGF Play Days demo or pre-launch materials. This wiki will add full keybind tables once confirmed.

Stealth & Survival

Stealth Gameplay

Trailers show infiltration through rocky outcrops, cave shadows, and settlement outskirts. Use terrain cover to avoid direct confrontation with Tibetan patrols and enemy forces. Dual-character stealth takedowns suggest planning and positioning matter as much as combat skill.

Survival Pressure

The journey itself is an antagonist. Sandstorms, blizzards, and harsh wilderness conditions appear in promotional material as dynamic environmental threats that compound combat difficulty.

Developers describe survival-focused action — adapting to changing situations, managing scarce advantages, and pushing through sieges and unforgiving terrain rather than power-fantasy domination.

  • Environmental hazards: sandstorms, snow, extreme cold
  • Terrain tactics: rock cover, cave passages, elevation advantage
  • Resource tension: health and stamina management under pressure

Map & Locations

The 3,000-Li Eastward Route

The game follows a linear eastward path — not an open-world map you freely explore. Chapters and regions unfold along the historical messenger route from the western frontier toward Chang'an.

Key Regions (From Trailers)

Environments span East and Central Asia with emphasis on the Hexi Corridor and Silk Road geography.

  • Shazhou / Dunhuang (敦煌) — uprising origin, Mogao Caves cultural landmarks
  • Hexi Corridor (河西走廊) — desert passages, fortresses, scanned real-world geography
  • Gobi Desert and wasteland — sandstorm traversal, siege remnants
  • Mountain and glacier crossings — blizzard survival sequences
  • Chang'an (长安) — Tang capital, narrative endpoint and political stakes

World Authenticity

The team collaborated with Gansu authorities on heritage site scanning, relic digitization, and ecological detail reproduction. Expect Dunhuang mural aesthetics, period architecture, and frontier fortifications rather than fantasy landscapes.

Note: Pre-Launch Data

Full item databases, upgrade paths, and inventory systems are not yet public. This section tracks weapons and tools visible in official trailers and will expand after the playable demo and launch.

Known Weapons from Trailers

Official footage confirms a grounded Tang-era arsenal focused on practical battlefield weapons rather than magical artifacts.

Items & Interaction

Trailers hint at environmental interaction: pushing stone statues, using light and shadow for puzzle mechanics, climbing, horseback travel, and vehicle sequences. Full item categories (consumables, crafting, documents) await demo confirmation.
